Playoffs 2024
“It’s hard to win a pennant, but it’s harder losing one.” ~ Chuck Tanner, former MLB manager
My apologies for being “missing in action” as of late. There are many reasons which I will more than likely detail in a future post. For now, let’s look at the playoff picture.
The Detroit Tigers (6) will play the Houston Astros (3), and the Kansas City Royals (5) will play the Baltimore Orioles (4) in the American League Wild Card Series. The Cleveland Guardians (2) will play the winner of Detroit / Houston series, and the New York Yankees (1) will play the winner of Kansas City / Baltimore series in the AL Divisional Series, winners move on to the AL Championship Series and the last team standing goes to the World Series.
The New York Mets (6) play the Milwaukee Brewers (3) and the Atlanta Braves (5) the San Diego Padres (4) in the National League Wild Card Series. The Philadelphia Phillies (2) will play the winner of New York / Milwaukee series, and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1) will play the winner of the Atlanta / San Diego series in the NL Divisional Series, winners move on to the NL Championship Series and the last team standing goes to the World Series.
All the Wild Card games begin today, October 1st. As they say, check your local listings for channel and games times.
My pre-season predictions had the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cleveland Guardians and the Texas Rangers winning their respective divisions with the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, and Houston Astros as the Wild Card teams in the American League.
My pre-season predictions had the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers winning their respective divisions with the Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres as the Wild Card teams in the National League.
I had the Toronto Blue Jays losing in seven games to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
All, in all, I didn’t choose poorly, or at the very least not as badly as usual. As I always qualify, “don’t bet on my recommendations”. I personally do not bet on sports (well, the occasional lunch on the White Sox / Cubs series, or the Green Bay Packers / Bears games).
I now see this year’s World Series being the Orioles verses the Dodgers with the Dodgers still winning it but doing it in six games. Only time will tell.
As mentioned above, the playoffs start today and if the full schedule plays out, the Series would end on Saturday, November 2nd (my 39th wedding anniversary). So, we have a month more of baseball, hopefully some of the best of the year.
Sit back and enjoy.
Thanks,
~ Coach Mike
Author’s Note: Over the past couple days, we lost a few notable people. Rest in Peace Singer / Songwriter Kris Kristofferson (one of my favourites), NBA great (and wonderful human being) Dikembe Mutombo, and MLB Hits Leader Pete Rose.
Also, a happy 100th birthday to James (Jimmy) Earl Carter, Jr. the 39th President of The United States (another great and caring human being).

Mike, if the full series plays out and game 7 is on November 2nd, that will be the 8th anniversary of the Cubs WS Championship !! What a day
