“Baseball is about talent, hard work, and strategy. But at the deepest level, it’s about love, integrity, and respect.” ~ Pat Gillick, MLB Executive
The results of the Base Ball Writers’ Association of America for the 2024 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot were announced tonight. The induction will take place during the Hall of Fame Weekend on Sunday, the 21st of July 2024.
We already know that Jim Leyland was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era on December 3rd with 93.75% of the votes. Gerry Fraley won the BBWAA Career Excellence Award and Joe Castiglione won the Ford C. Frick Award. this year.
My congratulations to Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton and Joe Mauer for being elected this year by the BBWAA. I said Beltre should go in and I’m happy he was a first ballot guy. I also said I’d vote for Mauer and again I’m happy that he’s going in on his first ballot. Although I had my reservations about Helton, he received the needed votes and was deemed worthy. The Class of 2024 is solid.
Here’s a look at the voting numbers:
Bobby Abreu - 57 votes, 14.8%.
Jose Bautista - 6 votes, 1.6%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Carlos Beltran - 220 votes, 57.1%.
Adrian Beltre - 366 votes, 95.1%. He’s in.
Mark Buehrle - 32 votes, 8.3%.
Bartolo Colon - 5 votes, 1.3%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Adrian Gonzalez - 3 votes, 0.8%. He will be dropped from the ballot.

Andruw Jones - 237 votes, 61.6%.
Victor Martinez - 6 votes, 1.6%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Joe Mauer - 293 votes, 76.1%. He’s in.
Andy Pettitte - 52 votes, 13.5%.
Brandon Phillips - 1 vote, 0.3%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Manny Ramírez - 125 votes, 32.5%.
Jose Reyes - 0 votes, 0%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Alex Rodriguez - 134 votes, 34.8%.
Francisco Rodriguez - 30 votes, 7.8%.
Jimmy Rollins - 57 votes, 14.8%.
Gary Sheffield - 246 votes, 63.9%. He is out of eligibility and is off the ballot.
James Shields - 0 votes, 0%. He will be dropped from the ballot.
Chase Utley - 111 votes, 28.8%.
Omar Vizquel - 68 votes, 17.7%.
Billy Wagner - 284 votes, 73.8%.
David Wright - 24 votes, 6.2%.
Once again, the obvious PED users didn’t get the required votes, nor did the players with off the field issues. As I’ve said previously, no one is “perfect”, but that’s my line in the sand, they used, no Hall and the other flaws need to be considered as well. I’ll stick with “integrity and character” as attributes that need to be present, along with the baseball accomplishments.
How did I do? I hit a couple this year. If you’d like to see my thoughts on the ballot, CLICK HERE. Please tell me how your choices did in the voting.
An aside; if you haven’t, get yourself out to Cooperstown and visit the Hall. Allow at least two days. It is a magical place where history comes alive.
