“I’ve been totally blessed over the years. This selection is just icing on the cake. And for it to be unanimous, it’s a beautiful thing.” ~ Fred McGriff
The Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee got it right. They unanimously elected Fred “The Crime Dog” McGriff to The Baseball Hall of Fame. He will be enshrined on Sunday, July 23, 2023, along with whomever, if any that are elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. We will have to wait until their voting is complete and the results announced on January 24, 2023. I will give you my selections in the near future.
The 16-member voting committee were comprised of Hall of Fame members: Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Jack Morris, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Frank Thomas, and Alan Trammel; veteran media members and historians: Steve Hirdt, LaVelle Neal and Susan Slusser; and major league executives: Paul Beeston, Theo Epstein, Arte Moreno, Kim Ng, Dave St. Peter, and Ken Williams. Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board Forbes Clark is a non-voting Chairman on the committee. Here are their complete results:
Fred McGriff: 16 votes, 100%
Don Mattingly, 8 votes, 50%
Curt Schilling, 7 votes, 43.8%
Dale Murphy, 6 votes, 37.5%
Albert Bell, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Rafael Palmeiro: Fewer than 4 votes.
The Committee got another thing right as well. With seven of their peers voting, the three PEDers (Bonds, Clemens, and Palmeiro) were rejected by at the very least a few former players. I have contended that users shouldn’t be in the Hall. I realize there are probably a few that have been enshrined, but this validates that character and integrity are and should continue to be attributes that are considered in the process. Thank you to all 16 members.
I still don’t feel a player that was on the Writers ballot last year should be eligible to be considered by this committee immediately. Perhaps a five-year wait would be fair. These players will have to wait another three years for the committee to vote on players again. Another point that I stick with is Curt Schilling asked not to be considered, I feel that request should be honoured. Again, character and integrity. Just my humble opinion.

My sincere congratulations to Fred McGriff.
